About US

Just a few years after graduating from West Rome High School, Larry began working for Rome Auto Parts Company as a delivery driver. He was soon working in the APCo machine shop, where he really wanted to be. For almost 20 years, he worked the APCo machine shop by day while building dirt track and drag racing engines in his home shop at night. With his hard work and many late nights, Larry Smith Racing Engines became such a success that he made the decision to turn his race engine hobby into a full time business. In 1998, Larry Smith Automotive Machine Shop was founded. Larry, with his son David, and their crew have been serving the mechanics and gearheads of Rome and the surrounding area since.

After 45 years in the machine shop, Larry passed the torch to his son, David, who has been part of the business from the very beginning. David started tearing down racing engines in the home garage at age 6 and was running machinery by age 10. In 1998 at age 13 he was helping paint and move into the new shop and has been part of the business ever since. He now runs the day to day operations at the shop and is looking forward to running and growing the family business for many more years to come.

Larry takes over as shop foreman at Apco in the early 90's.
